Beating COVID-19: 5 Helpful Tips From Someone Who’s Had It
Out of the 3.6 million coronavirus cases in the United States, 1.6 million have recovered. As scary as coronavirus may seem, it is beatable. While some cases are more severe, fighting coronavirus is akin to fighting off the flu. It’s no fun, for sure, but it’s possible with rest and medication. There are many different tips that can help your recovery and protect others from coronavirus.
1. Isolate Yourself
One of the first things you need to do if you believe you have COVID-19 or have been exposed to it is to self-isolate. If you live with others, they should consider staying with family or a friend while you quarantine. Self-isolating protects those around you from COVID-19 exposure. During your time isolating, you may be waiting to see if symptoms of coronavirus arise. You may have coronavirus and are waiting for it to run its course. Typically, if you are quarantining after coronavirus exposure, you will do so for two weeks. The length of time you isolate if you have coronavirus depends on how quickly you recover.
If your symptoms worsen during this time of isolation, you may consider calling your doctor. If they become severe or if you have an extremely high fever, go to the hospital. If you are running low on resources, ask a friend or loved one to drop off supplies outside of your home or apartment. You could also utilize grocery delivery.
2. Wear a Mask
Wearing a mask doesn’t just protect you from contact with coronavirus, it protects you from spreading it. If you ever have to come into contact with others while having coronavirus, you must both wear a mask. A mask will make a huge difference in protecting others (especially the elderly and immunocompromised) from COVID-19.
3. Wash Your Hands
You may have heard that washing your hands will prevent the spread of COVID-19 by killing traces of the virus. However, the same goes for those who are ill. By washing your hands frequently with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds) or using hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol), you can prevent yourself from spreading coronavirus. This is very important if you live with others, as coronavirus can survive on surfaces for hours (or days).
4. Avoid Sharing Items
This tip is very important if you live with others. Avoid sharing dishes, towels, bedsheets, and electronics if you have COVID-19. Even if you believe you have sanitized these items, the virus could still be present. You don’t want to take that risk.
5. When In Doubt, Test!
If you display any COVID-19 symptoms, you will want to consider testing straight away. Some of these symptoms include fever, congestion, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing. While you can quarantine for 14 days to monitor your illness, you will want to be sure if your symptoms are COVID-19 symptoms.
