DOT Physical Exams: What Do They Consist Of?

Hearing Test

Vision Test

Checking these vital signs will show any abnormalities and determine if you can sit for many hours behind the wheel. Checking your blood pressure and pulse rate can also reveal health issues that you may be unaware of.

Physical Exam

The physical exam is the most extensive part of the DOT physical. During this examination, the doctor will take a closer look at your general appearance. They may discuss your weight if that is an issue and any drug or alcohol problems you currently have or have had in the past.

The physician will check your lungs, mouth, and throat for any breathing or swallowing issues. The doctor will also look for any unusual masses or hernias in your abdomen.

The doctor will evaluate the vascular system by checking for a weak pulse and proper blood flow. The physician may also check for issues such as varicose veins or poor circulation during this time.

The physician will test your limbs for any loss, damage, and tenderness to ensure you can endure the long drives every day. They will check your skeletal system for tenderness or any limitations. You will also be tested for any neurological issues such as poor balance, speech, and reflexes.

During the physical, you may be asked if you are up to date on all your vaccinations. These vaccines can include Hepatitis A and B, Influenza, and the shot for Polio/Tetanus/Typhoid.
