Frequently Asked Questions About the COVID-19 Vaccine

With all of the news surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines that are becoming available, it is hard to keep track of the information that you need to know before getting that first shot. Especially now during such uncertain times, it can be hard to keep up to date on the updates, so here are some answers to the questions you may have surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines.

When Can I Get the Vaccine?

Currently, the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine in the United States is limited. The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) has recommended that the initial supply of the vaccine be distributed first to healthcare personnel and residents of long-term care facilities. These are the people working directly with the disease in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. After that, it’s recommended that the vaccine be distributed to frontline workers such as firefighters, police officers, grocery store workers, and those who work in the educational sector. Next, individuals aged 75 and older are

If I’ve Already Had the Virus, Do I Still Need to be Vaccinated?

In short, yes. It is possible to be reinfection with the disease. As the natural immunity, you gain after being infected varies from person to person- and scientists are still studying all of the factors that go into that-the antibodies you accumulate wear off after time.

However, if you were treated with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma while sick with the COVID-19 virus, it is recommended that you wait 90 days before receiving the vaccine.

Will I Still Need to Wear a Mask and Social Distance After Receiving Both Rounds of the Vaccine?

Because there are still so many risks involved with COVID-19, and there is still a lack of information surrounding the virus, you will still need to take precautions when you go out in public. Experts are still learning about this virus and the vaccine; so, until there is more information, it is best to still take precautions such as wearing a mask that covers both the nose and mouth, avoiding large crowds, and maintaining at least a 6-foot distance between other people.

Is the Vaccine Safe?

All of the COVID-19 vaccines being distributed have been proven safe after being tested diligently. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)has granted Emergency Use Authorization for these vaccines that have been put through testing and meet all safety criteria. Both of the Vaccines beingadministered have met all of the safety criteria.

How Many Shots of the Vaccine do I Need?

Presently, both the Pfizer-BioNTech and the Moderna vaccines that are being administered in the United States require 2 doses. The CDC recommends that you get your second shot as close to the 3 weeks to a month mark as possible, but there is currently no maximum interval. There are other vaccines in phase 3 of clinical trials but are not yet approved at this time.

What Can I Do While Waiting for My Vaccine

Until it is your turn to get your COVID-19 vaccine, it is best to continue wearing a mask over your mouth and nose and to maintain a distance of6 feet from others when you are in public. If you are exhibiting symptoms of the virus, the CDC recommends getting tested and quarantining while you wait for your results.
