How to Soothe Your Sore Throat

Sore throats can be very uncomfortable and difficult to deal with. We’ve all experienced the pain of feeling like you’re swallowing sandpaper. But, do you know how to soothe a sore throat as quickly as possible? There are plenty of home remedies to provide some comfort. However, finding the right one comes down to first understanding why your throat hurts to begin with.

Understand The Cause Before Trying Sore Throat Remedies

Sometimes viral or bacterial infections are to blame for a sore throat. Other times, things like acid reflux, smoking, or breathing dry air can cause discomfort. In the case of an infection, sore throat remedies typically mask the pain temporarily. That’s why it’s important to understand the cause before trying different at-home solutions. In this case, it’s best to see a doctor.

So, What Helps With a Sore Throat?

Once you’ve narrowed down the reason, you can pursue soothing at-home remedies. But, what helps with a sore throat? Here are some effective solutions for sore throat.

Gargle Salt Water

Gargling salt water is one of the most effective methods of soothing any type of sore throat. The salt works to draw any irritants to the front of your throat where the body can naturally cure them. It also helps to reduce inflammation so it’s easier to swallow food and liquids. Gargle salt water for a couple of minutes every hour, and you may experience less discomfort throughout the day.

Use A Humidifier

Dry air can significantly impact the severity of your sore throat. Using a humidifier at home can help keep a sore throat under control. You could also take a steamy bath or shower to clear up mucus in your nose. Often, mucus is the underlying cause of a sore throat.

Try Herbal Tea

Herbal teas are popular options for soothing a sore throat. Turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory spice to add to the tea you drink. You might also consider adding turmeric to the saltwater you gargle. Herbal teas can help the body fight infections while also boosting the immune system.

Take a Spoonful of Honey

Honey offers antibacterial benefits and can provide a throat coat to alleviate irritation. Adding a spoonful of honey to warm tea or honey can slowly soothe your sore throat. You could also simply put the spoonful right in your mouth without mixing it to experience quicker benefits.

Drink Cold Liquids to Combat Inflammation

Drinking cold liquids will be uncomfortable if you have a severe sore throat, but they can be helpful. The coldness serves to numb the throat slightly and temper the inflammation you’re experiencing. If you don’t want to drink cold liquids all day, you could suck on a popsicle instead. Just be sure to avoid acidic flavors since they could make your symptoms worsen.

Sleep With Your Head Elevated

Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can relieve pressure on the throat. This is an especially helpful tip if your sore throat is a result of acid reflux. An elevated head keeps the acid in your stomach rather than making its way to the throat.

Rest Your Throat and See a Doctor if Symptoms Persist

Sometimes, there’s no clear answer for soothing a sore throat fast. If you’ve tried multiple sore throat remedies with no luck, visiting a doctor is the next step. Rest combined with antibiotics might be what you need to get rid of your sore throat for good.
